So THIS review has been a long time coming. I know I say this with nearly all my posts…but this one has been a.long.time.coming. It just got a bit rudely shoved to the side by Soapwalla (not with any malice mind!) but now that order is restored (all products waiting to be reviewed take a collective sigh of relief) let me introduce you to May Lindstrom’s The Honey Mud and the Problem Solver.
If you haven’t heard of May Lindstrom yet then I take it you’ve been living under a rock and it’s high time to come out! Once again, memory of a goldfish fails me when I try to remember how I first came across May myself but it was a while back, last year sometime. I then found out that my favourite eco-store, Alice & White (review) would be stocking this wonderful brand and was online literally every day checking to see if it had arrived or not. That’s how excited I was! When it finally was up on the site my next problem appeared- what to get. Because you can’t help but want the entire line that oozes luxurious, decadent natural beauty…and the packaging! If I were a product I would want to look like a May Lindstrom product. All her lovely creations are housed in violet Miron glass pots or bottles. Miron glass dates back to ancient Egyptian civilization where beauty creators of that time would keep valuable oils in this pretty container, making sure to protect products from light which can change the composition of a substance over a period of time. This means that you can be assured of products maintaining their potency and high quality for longer. And I don’t know about you, but I love not having to worry about keeping my beauty stash in the furthermost corner of my bathroom cabinet (even though I do make sure my skincare products are in a good place!). Plus I live with a guy who loves leaving the bathroom light on…and explaining what happens to my products with said light on only got me a confused look. He’ll learn. Eventually! So big thumbs up for May for choosing to bottle her lotions and potions in Miron glass. Not only functional but beautiful too.
May describes herself as an “explorer, someone who is passionate about creating unique and indulgent recipes for exquisite skin.” To truly get the feel and vibe of who she is and what she loves about doing what she does I recommend you skip over to her website here. It really captures the essence of the founder and the brand and my ramblings here could do no justice. Suffice to say she is in love with her work, her creations, about connecting us back to our skin and wanting us to really be in the now whether we are cleansing, toning, moisturising or protecting our skin with her beautiful products.
Now on to the first product I got which was The Problem Solver. I bought this a while back now and I still have plenty left. One pot, though a bit expensive, will last you a good while especially if you only use it once a week like I do. At the time of my order there were some shipping problems at Alice & White so my delivery took a bit longer than usual but to compensate for that I also received the beautiful mixing bowl and brush as gifts! I was absolutely thrilled to be given these as they alone aren’t friendly on a poor student’s bank account. So thank you again Alice & White for your generosity and kindness. (I’ve told you how much I love them, right?). Delighted with my order I promptly set about a pamper session with The Problem Solver. I had never mixed any skincare products in a bowl like this before so it was quite a novel experience and one that I cannot live without now. In the instructions it says to activate a tablespoon with equal parts water (or whatever else you might want to mix it with) however I feel this is too much for my face so I usually go for half. See how this will last you ages? I then apply the mixture with the brush (my favourite part after rinsing to reveal clear smooth skin!) and get comfy on the couch with a good book or the like for about 30-45 minutes, or until dry. The first time I tried it I definitely felt the warm tingly sensation that May mentions you might get. It was a good tingly though and it felt as though my face was receiving a massage from within. The Problem Solver contains Fuller’s Earth clay which is one of the most natural and beneficial cleansing agents and helps with acne scar removal. It cleanses and draws out impurities from deep within the skin that clog the pores so believe me when I say your skin feels refreshed and renewed after rinsing. Fuller’s Earth on its own is very drying which is why it needs to be mixed with water, but for those with oilier complexions this will help in regulating and balancing out sebum production, ensuring that all excess oils in the skin are removed promoting purified skin from within. This effective product also contains Bamboo Carbon Charcoal Powder for its healing properties as well as Lavender flower and a group of warm exotic spices to jump start your skin and make it think it has been to the gym even though you’ve only been sitting on the couch with your legs up. My kind of gym in other words! I think this mask would be great for those with oilier skin types but if mixed with honey or yoghurt, suitable for more sensitive skins as well. I have fairly reactive skin myself and for the first few weeks of using this I was left with redness around my cheek area. It would go away after 30 mins or so but I wanted to know if this was normal so I contacted May with my query and this is what she said:
It is lovely to hear from you! Thank you so much for the note and reaching out. I’m so happy you are enjoying The Problem Solver. The temporary redness you are experiencing is absolutely normal and healthy. The warming spices in this formula are what make it so powerful and effective! This is like going to the gym or the sauna for your skin, minus the extra effort. 🙂
I wanted to give you a bit of additional information that I always find helpful since it really is a different experience than other powder formula masques on the market, natural or otherwise.
The Problem Solver is famous for the active heat sensation you feel as this treatment’s blend of power-players get to work. A notable acne fighter and skin beautifier here is the very potent cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper stimulates blood flow to the skin, which enables oxygen and necessary nutrients to reach the cells. It reduces inflammation and swelling and delivers antioxidant carotenes, flavonoids and high concentrations of vitamins C, A and E. For some of my clients, this heat is experienced as a mild tingle – in others, it is much more intense. This can vary even among the same person depending on the state of their skin at the time, what other products are being used, where they are in their hormonal cycle, if they are healthy or feeling unwell. Either way, the heat is a positive thing and what makes this such a special and effective treatment. If you know what to expect, it’s hugely addicting. I promise you will grow to crave this heat! 🙂
Nutmeg and clove are both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, stopping breakouts in their tracks. Nutmeg is also a natural skin brightener, softening spots and discolorations and clove has a stimulating effect on the mind, which eliminates mental exhaustion and fatigue.
Cinnamon facilitates the synthesis of collagen in the skin, the breakdown of which is partially responsible for the skin’s appearance as we mature in years.
Raw cacao is insanely high in antioxidant superpowers (cocoa bean has 621 antioxidants, compared to a blueberry’s 32), and has the added clinically proven effect of lowering stress hormones.
The Problem Solver gets it’s signature black hue from activated bamboo carbon charcoal. In many parts of Asia this sexy sounding ingredient has been used for centuries for its ability to deeply and gently cleanse your pores, absorbing minerals, toxins, impurities, and other harmful substances from your skin. It is known as the “black diamond” of healers and addresses everything from acne to eczema with grace and ease. Once brought to life with water, the bamboo charcoal releases many beneficial minerals, such as calcium, potassium and magnesium.
Rhassoul clay is truly one of the most effective ingredients in the battle for clear skin. It is very high in trace minerals such as silica, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium and sodium. Because of the high mineral content, astringent properties, and absorption properties, this clay is incredible for cleansing and detoxification. In clinical tests, Rhassoul has been shown to be effective on skin elasticity, clogged pores, improving skin clarity and appearance, and reducing flakiness and dryness.
Fuller’s Earth clay is a naturally occurring sedimentary clay composed mainly of alumina, silica, iron oxides, lime, and magnesia. It has been widely used as a skin-lightening agent, and it produces a lightening effect on the outer epidermal layer of the skin. Because of its enormous drawing capabilities, Fuller’s Earth clay literally draws and absorbs oil from the skin, and is the number one choice for those with oily skin or those who are prone to acne.
Red Alaea is sea salt that is created through natural evaporation when it is trapped in tidal pools and mixes with red volcanic clay. The red color itself comes from the extremely high amount of iron in the clay. The salt is said to contain 80 different naturally occurring minerals.
The healing nutrients of Red Alaea can be absorbed directly through the skin. It can draw out and eliminate toxins, promoting a smooth and healthy complexion.
The Problem Solver can be incorporated into every person’s beauty ritual. I generally recommend a full treatment once per week. For more sensitive types, just once or twice a month will make a great impact. If you have an active outbreak you are looking to clear or have sturdier skin that requires more intensive treatment, twice a week will suit you perfectly. You can even treat yourself three days in a row prior to big events or occasions when you are seeking an especially radiant complexion.
For the most impact, always use The Problem Solver following a thorough cleansing. You want your pores warm and open, ready to deeply absorb all the wonderful ingredients. Take the time to really enjoy your ritual, breathe as you feel the heat move into your cells. When your treatment is complete, step into a hot shower, allowing the steam and running water to soften the masque before rinsing away. After, be sure to hydrate and nourish your skin. The Youth Dew is a perfect compliment to The Problem Solver – massage a few pumps onto face, neck & decollete while skin is still damp. Enjoy and please do always feel free to reach out if you have additional thoughts or questions.
Is that the most wonderful reply or what? I wanted to share this with you all (apologies for the length of this review!) as it really gives you so much information about The Problem Solver and may help those who are thinking about getting it to decide. Otherwise as evidenced above, it is simply to get in touch with the lovely founder herself and I am sure she will guide you in the right direction for your skin type. So, final thoughts on The Problem Solver? A powerhouse masque that really gets in and draws out excess oil leaving you with super soft skin. I may have experienced some redness in the beginning but I still had super soft skin!
Not thinking I could be happier with a masque, not long after I got The Problem Solver, May launched the fabulous Honey Mud. Had this been available at the time of ordering I probably would have gotten this first. As so happened I was gifted this very generously by, once again, my favourite eco-store Alice & White when I started my blog back in February. A Congratulations To Your New Blog gift in other words. I was over the moon as I had been eyeing this one for a while and had decided to get it after I finished The Problem Solver. It didn’t help when May commented on my Instagram feed that the two together is the most amazing masque ever. Great. So much for waiting until The Problem Solver runs out I thought when Alice & White so generously came to the rescue.
Thanks to May for creating the product and Alice & White for gifting it to me I can say my skin has never been happier. The Honey Mud is an A-list product. It should be in everyone’s skincare arsenal in my opinion for its gentle efficacy, delicious smell (must not eat, must not eat) and silky smooth texture. I LOVE this product. I have been using it every morning as a cleanser since February and mixing with The Problem Solver once a week. May is right, the two together…divine! The Honey Mud has been described as The Problem Solver’s gentler sister and that says it all I reckon. Two unique personalities that complement one another very well, this is by far my favourite masque mixture. This also means I use even less of The Problem Solver (but more of The Honey Mud, booo) so again, one pot will last you a while. I am soon running out of The Honey Mud and this will definitely be a purchase for me. It doesn’t strip your skin at all, leaves you with clear looking skin with no redness and soft to the touch. My skin loves it, I love it…and I’m sure yours will to! As I was used to more foaming cleansers in the past I did wonder if this cleansing silk was doing anything…oh how ignorant I was! As the name implies, it contains raw honey with bee pollen and propolis. Honey is a clarifying humectant thus leaving your skin moisturised and pores unclogged, and I really believe this ingredient has helped balance my skin out. More honey to Nic! Other skin beneficial ingredients include witch hazel extract (reduces inflammation and redness), macadamia nut oil (calming and soothing, reduces itchiness), cocoa absolute oil (anti-oxidant), white halloysite clay (absorbs toxins & impurities, exfoliates) to name but a few. The much talked about colloidal silver is in there too but I haven’t had an averse reaction to it and I’m about 3 months in.
I would keep raving about this product and its skin loving ingredients but I feel I must end this here before it gets even longer! Well done to those who have come this far, I will honestly try to keep my reviews shorter…try being the operative word here! Thanks for reading green beauty bunnies and let me know what you think of The Problem Solver and The Honey Mud in the comments if you want. Have you tried anything else from May Lindstrom and what are your thoughts? Both products can be bought here.
Happy pampering weekend! (that’s me with the TPS x THM mix)
All opinions stated are my own. The Honey Mud was given to me as gift from Alice & White.
